Lead Chemical Engineer (m/v)

Stora Enso is a leading provider of renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden constructions and paper globally.

Stora Enso division Biomaterials decided to invest EUR 9 million to build a pilot facility in Belgium, located at Stora Enso’s Langerbrugge Mill in Ghent. The pilot plant will convert plant-based sugars into FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), the renewable building block required to make PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a bio-based plastic. This PEF will be used as a barrier in transparent packaging, mainly targeting the food and beverage industry. In addition to its renewable nature, PEF’s attractive barrier and his mechanical and thermal properties opens new packaging opportunities, such as small liquid containers for soft drinks, juices and other beverages.

The investment in bio-based chemistry further strengthens Stora Enso’s opportunities to replace fossil-based materials with renewable and recyclable materials.

Join us and contribute to building the renewable materials company.

We are looking for a Lead Chemical Engineer who will take ownership of the validation and optimization of the pilot process and prepare the process for future scale-up to commercial production. Working closely with the Pilot Plant Manager, you will play a critical role in safe and efficient operations of the pilot and obtaining learnings for optimization and scale up. Assuming a positive outcome from the pilot process, you will translate the learnings of the pilot to an industrial process, potentially at the same site as the pilot. You will work in close collaboration with the Stora Enso Langerbrugge team and the Innovation organization located in Stockholm (Sweden).

During the construction and installation phase, you will guide equipment suppliers and ensure that any scope changes are in line with the pilot plant requirements. You will also contribute to the preparations for the commissioning and operation, by supporting the team in creating training materials, operating procedures and designs of experiments. After commissioning, once the pilot is operational, you will guide the team of engineers, operators and chemists in properly running the pilot for obtaining relevant process data and sample material.

Role

In close collaboration with the local Pilot Plant Manager and international project team members, you are responsible for:

  • Coordination of the site modifications to host pilot operations, as well as the installation and SAT (Site Acceptance Test) of the pilot.

  • The installation of new process equipment and process modifications when required after start-up.

  • Securing safe and efficient operations.

  • Leveraging internal and external resources to accomplish needs for operations and maintenance projects.

  • Optimise the performance of the pilot to generate reliable data for scale up and on-spec samples for application testing.

Profile of the ideal candidate:

  • You have a Master’s or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering with 5+ years of industrial experience  in the chemical industry.

  • Safety has become part of your DNA

  • You are experienced in operating and/or troubleshooting chemical processes

  • You can handle ad hoc needs without losing sight of long-term project needs

  • You have a critical, analytical mind

  • You can translate operational and analytical results into the next set of experiments

  • You understand how results at pilot scale translate into design of commercial scale

  • You can solve process issues by finding and addressing the root-cause

  • You have experience in process control and automation

  • You can model chemical processes and routinely work with process simulation software

  • You have the ability to constructively interact with colleagues within the company, as well as with outside contractors

  • You have solid written and oral communication skills. You create instructions that drive progress and reports that drive decision making

  • You are fluent in Dutch and English
